Nerds, Sluts, (Commies) and Jocks
Nerds, Sluts, (Commies) and Jocks was created by Free Street Artists age 13-19 in the Spring of 2014. The piece explores the function of social labels as a form of social control - featuring a Foucault puppet as the guide! Directed and developed by Coya Paz with L'Oreal Patrice Jackson.
When the Free Street youth ensemble decided to create a play about labeling, naturally they turned to Michel Foucault. For real. Appearing throughout the piece as a wise puppet, Foucault guides the comic action as the actors examine his theories about the power of labels and show what it costs to challenge who people say you are."Nerds" had a five-show run in May of 2014 and played to sold-out houses and standing ovations. This excerpt (performed as part of the play) is a re-enactment of the lively "debates" that took place during the script development process.
Experimental theater for college and high school students is discussed with DePaul University's Coya Paz. The Street Theater will perform in Chicago parks this month and summer.
